Judy Trupin, USA <trupinjet@gmail.com>
Nigel Caplan, USA <nigelcaplan@yahoo.com>
Marc Sheffner, Japan <Marco47jp@yahoo.co.uk>

During this six-week Electronic Village Online session, moderators and participants will discuss the principle views of various second language acquisition theorists, including Krashen (the monitor model), Vygotsky (the interactionist approach), Pica, Schmidt, and others. Participants will be encouraged to offer examples of activities and practices that implement various aspects of the theories discussed. Pictures, videos, and other multi-media material will be collected and posted on a dedicated website to further demonstrate the actual form and method of implementation of the activities.

Target Audience

All ESOL teachers on the elementary, secondary, and tertiary levels with an interest in drama. Participants need the ability to upload material (with guidance) to a Website, and post links and files to our Yahoo Group.

Weekly Content
Week I – Introductions, guidelines for the session, netiquette, posting of participant pictures, general socializing: A virtual cocktail party. Discussion and practice with the interface. Suggested readings: How Languages are Learned, Patsy Lightbown and Nina Spada; Thought and Language, Lev Vygotsky; Explorations in Language Acquisition, Stephen Krashen; and Words into Words, Shin-Mei Kao and Cecily O’Neill. Additional readings will be posted in the FILES area of our YG and indicated in LINKS. A survey will be conducted to determine who has materials to post and share with the group and in what format.

Week II – Participants offer their thoughts on the validity of various theoretical approaches to language teaching. Additional SLA links and files will be posted through input of participants. Participants will describe particular activities and show how the activities implement various theoretical approaches.

Week III - From the discussion of Week Two, major theories are selected, focused on, and discussed in greater detail. Participants will be asked to contribute further activities that support each major theoretical position.

Week IV - Participants will be asked to contribute visual material in form of pictures, video, or audio material that they have produced as examples of how their activities are implemented. A dedicated web page will be constructed to host the material and Marc Sheffner will be on hand to explain the upload procedure for all materials.

Week V - From the material submitted during Week Four, discussion will focus on the examples offered. Participants will describe their work and the theory that supports the activity. Participants will also add their own ideas regarding possible adaptations and/or extensions.

Week VI - Summation of main theoretical approaches and activities, conclusions, and suggestions for further exploration. Evaluation of this EVO session.

Communication Media - will consist of postings, links to relevant sites, and a web page dedicated to audio-video drama projects.
