JiTT – Just in Time Teaching looks at ways teachers can find out what students know and think about material before they begin to teach it. Knowing these things allows teachers to adjust to the students “just in time” and give them what they need. Using JiTT in a Web environment, teachers might ask students to post their comments or reactions to an article or assignment before class so the teacher can read them and then present appropriate material in class. In a non-Web environment, this could be done by asking students to respond to readings or other materials in writing and then teachers collecting and reading them before a class. In so doing, the teacher can address the troubling aspects of assignments and where students show they have a need of input or interest “just in time.”

Objectives:  Participants will
  • become familiar with ways we can do JiTT and the advantages
  • create some Knowledge Surveys and understand their uses and advantages
  • interact with other members to construct better tools and procedures for language learning using JiTT
  • reflect on our own ways of teaching and see how they can be improved with better ongoing needs analysis
  • form an online community of support for exploring the above objectives

Target Audience

ESL/EFL teachers interested in improving their teaching through a better understanding of what their students know and think. Having an e-mail account, familiarity with word processors, and Internet access are all that is required.

Weekly Content
Week I – Getting acquainted with Yahoo Groups. Introductions. Exploratory Knowledge Survey. Participants will get acquainted with the Yahoo Groups platform, introduce themselves to the group, and complete a Knowledge Survey about the material that will be presented in the course.

Week II – Introductory articles and discussions about Just in Time Teaching - Participants will read articles and post their reflections and questions about using JiTT on line and off. Moderators will share their experiences with JiTT.

Week III - Introductory articles about Knowledge Surveys (KSs) as JiTT tools. Participants will get to see several examples of Knowledge Surveys, read about them, and discuss their construction and use with a view toward creating our own the following week.
Guest presenter: Ed Nuhfer, Idaho State University (creator of KSs)

Week IV - Action research with JiTT and KSs. Participants will plan, create, and if possible begin their own KSs and experiences with JiTT. They will post online their activities to get feedback from other participants and the moderators.

Week V -  Continuing action research and looking at first results. Participants who were able to do JiTT in some way will report on their preliminary findings and others may continue elaborating their designs.

Week VI - Wrap-up: conclusions and evaluation. While continuing action research and looking at more results, participants will post final (on-going) results and look at their plans to use JiTT in the future. Session evaluation.

There will be weekly summaries posted by the moderators.
