Video and Editing for ESOL

Filming, video, and editing, as a fun and exciting approach to communicative lessons.

    video editing
Moderators:
Nicolas Gromik, Japan <video_editing4esol@yahoo.com.au>
Michael Marzio, France <mike@realenglish.com>

Guest Speaker: Bruce Moon, Japan

This is a hands-on project-oriented online workshop.  By the end of this workshop, the participants (beginners and/or advanced, according to the nature of the participants’ needs in 2006) will have covered the basics, and explored some of the more advanced strategies of videotaping and editing.  They will be able to incorporate this new teaching strategy into their classroom.

This session helps participants use free Microsoft Movie Maker, pre-installed on XP operating systems. and iMovie, available on Apple Macintosh computers.  These video editing packages are easy to use, and a good foundation
from which to develop experience with videotaping and editing.  During this workshop participants will also be able to investigate other programs of their choice.

Target Audience

Video_editing4esol is a Yahoo!Group which came into action during EVO 2005.  Any teacher--both beginners and advanced computer users--with any range of knowledge, from limited to expert, of video-making and editing is welcome to participate.

Weekly Content
Week I – Welcome
During this week participants will become familiar with navigating the video_editing4esol Yahoo!Group.  Participants and moderators will introduce themselves and describe the equipment and software available to them.  During week 1 moderators will ensure that all participants have the required equipment for editing as well as access to some videotaping resources.

Week II – Video making: What is involved?
Topics to be discussed during this week are:
 -    video genres
 -    video equipment – this is an important aspect of the course and will be
covered in greater details during week 2.
 -    organisation and management of resources and class

Week III - Accessing Resources
Participants will find and use online video and editing tutorials, they will also explore websites that provide videos for educational purposes.  For example;
-    film or video sites = http://tinyurl.com/9gvu8
-    Editing Tutorials = www.atomiclearning.com

Questions to consider:
-    Which tutorial resources are suitable for which type of learner category?
-    What do educational sites using videos have in common/difference?

Week IV -  Videotaping
Hands on experiment, for participants with the right equipment and time are to make a very short one minute clip of their choice.
Topics of discussion during the week (or once videos are completed) will reflect the process of making a video:
- What types of problems would students encounter when making a video?
- Is it reasonable to expect students to make a video clip without a script to stimulate spontaneous speaking ability?
During Weeks 4 & 5, participants will work with their preferred video acquisition and editing software.  Nicolas will specialize in Windows Movie Maker 2; Mike in Adobe Premiere 6.x or Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5; and Bruce in Studio9.
Week V Editing a Video
Hands on experiment with editing. During this week the creative aspects of editing a video are discussed and experienced with;
- including pictures, music and voice,
- using transitions and effects.
Questions to consider:
What would be an appropriate time frame for students to learn to use editing software with relative efficiency?

Week VI - What to do with videos & feedback
- Compressing videos for web delivery
- Participating in video competitions
- Creating websites for online delivery
- Session evaluation

About the Moderators:
Nicolas Gromik currently works at Tohoku University in Japan.  He has been using and training students to produce videos of various genres for the last three years, ranging from basic videotaping with Senior High School students to sophomore and advanced Japanese speakers of English.  He is currently experimenting with the art of mini-documentary video-making.

Mike Marzio
has been involved in most aspects of video-making for ESL/EFL since the late 1970s.  He is American, an EFL teacher who created a continuing education language school for adults in the south of France (http://www.realenglish.tm.fr), also integrating video and interactive exercise-making to create language learning resources for students around the globe (http://www.real-english.com).  He has contributed to many EVO projects and is the co-founder with Dr. Elizabeth Hanson-Smith of the Real English Online Yahoo Group.  He edits in France when not videotaping in the USA or other English-speaking countries.
