COURSE DESCRIPTION of CSAD 126

Speech Sound Development and Disorders in Children: Aspects of Articulation and Phonology

This class involves the study of typical speech sound development in children. The class also involves discussion of etiologies and specific characteristics of articulatory-phonological disorders, also known as speech sound disorders. There are detailed descriptions and analyses of specific assessment and treatment materials and procedures. Use of case studies  helps students integrate information taught in this class. There are hands-on class activities to give students practice in broad phonetic transcription of speech sound errors. Evidence-based practice is emphasized, with a direct focus on scientific research studies to support information taught in the course.  The concepts of linguistic human rights, intersectionality, and equity vs. equality are incorporated into the course. Spring only; 3 units.

It is important to bring each PowerPoint outline to class, as some notetaking is required. You may print out hard copies of each PowerPoint and take notes by hand, or you can take notes electronically on your laptop or other device. If you miss a class, you will be expected to get notes from other students. Class attendance is strongly encouraged so that you do not miss information.
