The CALL Interest Section of the international TESOL association offers
ISs and Caucuses the opportunity to participate in the Electronic
Village Online (EVO), a professional development project and virtual
extension of the TESOL 2005 Convention in San Antonio, Texas. The
intended audience for this project includes both TESOL 2005
participants and those who can participate only virtually. You do not
need to be a TESOL member to participate in sessions of the
Electronic Village
Online.

THE EV ONLINE SESSIONS
For six
weeks, participants and ESOL experts can engage in
collaborative, online discussion sessions or hands-on virtual workshops
of professional and scholarly benefit. These sessions will bring
together participants for a longer period of time than is permitted by
the four-day convention and will allow a fuller development of ideas
than is otherwise possible. The sessions are free
and open to all interested parties. You do not need to be a TESOL
member to participate.

Target
Audience
Teachers interested in designing and developing unique classes using
authentic materials from the news on the web.
Content
Description
As our world becomes smaller with globalization, our learners’ needs
become more specific. We need to find new ways to address this
challenge by providing attractive cross-cultural learning
opportunities. In this hands-on workshop, participants will share the
creation of useful integrated-skills activities based on authentic
materials from Voice of America news broadcasts.(http://voanews.com).
They will design lesson plans and develop creative classroom strategies
for different proficiency levels to satisfy students’ needs and
interests.
Week by Week
Outline
Week I - Exploring
the Yahoo Group site
Introduction. Moderators and participants will get to know each other.
Week II
- Exploring VOA
Participants will explore the VOA news Web site http://voanews.com
and get familiar with its contents and potential as a language teaching
resource.
The audience will be divided into groups or pairs to discuss
relevant
theoretical support information. Each group will be given different
quotes from various authors to discuss with his/her group members.
Then, they will bring their feedback to the whole group.
Week III
- Theoretical background
The audience will be divided into groups or pairs to discuss relevant
theoretical support information. Each group will be given different

Week IV
- Developing student's profile and selecting a broadcast
Participants will be guided in the selection of their own VOA news
broadcast. Students’ background knowledge activation will be considered
in carrying out the development of classroom activities for all skills
and also for building vocabulary.
Week V -
Designing a lesson plan and worksheets
Lesson plans and worksheets will be created integrating all skills.
Hands-on activities for all skills --listening, speaking, reading, and
writing—and for vocabulary build-up will be designed for different
levels of proficiency.
Week VI
- Sharing outcomes
Participants will share the outcome of their work and brainstorm
alternative news resources for language teaching.
