Involving Senior Citizen
Volunteers in ITA Programs
|
This
session is sponsored by the Computer-Assisted Language Learning
Interest Section of TESOL
Moderator:
Caroline Rosen
Target
Audience
ITA instructors and administrators interested in finding external
language support for their ITA participants.
Content
Description
This discussion group addresses a perennial concern among international
teaching assistant (ITA) instructors: how to get their ITAs to practice
speaking English outside of the classroom. One possible way of
addressing this issue is develop a senior citizen volunteer component
in order to work with those ITAs needing extra assistance in practicing
their spoken English. In addition to building ITAs' English
proficiency, volunteers can serve as a valuable resource for offering
cultural information to ITAs. The nuts and bolts of putting together
such a volunteer program will be discussed, including future guided
questions, chats, and brainstorming sessions.
Week by Week
Outline
Week I
The first week will be mostly a time to get to meet one another online
and to find out everyone’s interests and questions about participating
in the group. A general overview will be given on our senior citizen
volunteer program at the University of Minnesota.
Week II
The topic of discussion will focus on how to find and recruit senior
citizen volunteers in the community, and how to screen potential
volunteers.
Week III
This week will focus on setting up some of the basic components of a
volunteer program, and how to coordinate communication among the
volunteers, ITAs and ITA instructors.
Week IV
The discussion will involve specific examples of advertisements,
policies, orientation activities, training guides and feedback forms
for such a program.
Week V
We’ll talk about the benefits of this volunteer program, for both
senior citizens and ITAs, along with possible caveats that may arise.
Week VI
Online Participants will be encouraged to discuss ways in which such a
volunteer program may be implemented at their own institutions.
