    The CALL Interest Section of the international TESOL association offers ISs and Caucuses the opportunity to participate in the Electronic Village Online (EVO), a professional development project and virtual extension of the TESOL 2005 Convention in San Antonio, Texas. THE EV ONLINE SESSIONS

    For six weeks, participants and ESOL experts can engage in collaborative, online discussion sessions or hands-on virtual workshops of professional and scholarly benefit. These sessions will bring together participants for a longer period of time than is permitted by the four-day convention and will allow a fuller development of ideas than is otherwise possible. The sessions are free and open to all interested parties. You do not need to be a TESOL member to participate.

Filming and Editing in the EF/SL class

Target Audience
From beginners to advanced Computer users with limited experience in making films.  Any TESOL members (even those who are not teacher) as well as students are welcome to participate.

Software & Equipment
  • Microsoft XP, Movie Maker 2 or Macintosh iMovie. The presenter has an Apple Mac and will be available to discuss approaches to deal with any difficulties.  Any other software will not be targeted during this workshop.
  • Digital Video Camera
  • Any website building software such as Adobe GoLive or Macromedia Flash.
  • CD burner software and hardware

Content Description
This is a hands-on project-oriented online workshop.  By the end of this workshop, participants will have covered the basics of filming and editing.  They will be able to incorporate this new teaching strategy into their classroom.  Microsoft Movie Maker is pre-installed in all XP operating systems.  It is an easy program to use and from which to develop a good foundation experience with filming and editing.  Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able either to continue with Movie Maker or to investigate other programs of their choice.

Week by Week Outline
Each week will have the content documented on a PowerPoint presentation available online for participants to access at any time convenient to them.

Week I
Participants will
- Become familiar with Yahoo! Groups
- Introduce themselves and get acquainted with the group
- Access files and read up on "Netiquette"
- Complete the polls
- Check equipment

Week II
Participants will review:
- Objectives (why learn filming and editing)
- Purpose (benefits of incorporating filming and editing in ESL class)
- Equipment required (Hard/software, cameras, cables, CD-R/RW, Tapes)
- Assessment pieces for students (criteria, themes, time line)
- Project (this project will include an assessment requirement. This will provide participants with ideas for assessment)

Week III
Participants will make a film:
- Thinking of a theme
- Constructing a story board
- Writing a script
- One minute film
- Environment, lights, settings

Week IV
Participants will have completed their one minute film and will begin editing:
- What software to use for editing
- Becoming familiar with editing tools
- Where to find documentation and tutorials to learn more about editing
- Visiting websites available to use as teaching resources
- Saving film on computer

Week V
Participants will
- Discuss design and purposes of their film
- Use Web design tool/software to create courseware to enhance students' learning.
- Explore free Website services, such as Geocities

Week VI
Wrap-up. This week is dedicated to
- Answering last questions
- Discussing your future aspirations with filming
- How Filming and Editing reflects your teaching methodology and aspirations


Communication Media
- Discussion posting and online chat  
-Website for power point presentation
- Website to upload films      
- Email for personal assistance.
