Sutter's Fort
Built over 150 years ago, Sutter’s Fort was part of one of the earliest immigrant settlements in California’s Central Valley. The Fort was built by a Swiss immigrant named John Sutter who worked to establish a thriving agricultural center on the land he had been granted by the Mexican government. With the excitement of California’s Gold Rush, Sutter’s agricultural endeavors were overwhelmed by gold-diggers. The fort is all that remains of Sutter’s properties.
Visitors to Sutter’s Fort can enjoy a self-guided tour through the grounds, and special events are held throughout the year. Living History events and Pioneer Demonstration Days provide a glimpse into the past through live demonstrations of pioneer life.
Sutter’s Fort is open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. Visitors should check the California Parks website for scheduled special events. The Fort is located in midtown Sacramento between L and K Streets, and 26th and 28th Streets. The full address is 2701 L St
Sacramento, CA 95816, and the phone number is (916) 445-4422. Admission for Living History and Pioneer Demonstration Days is $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children (6-17 years) and children under the age of 5 are free.
