The Sacramento Zoo

Sacramento Zoo jpg

The Sacramento Zoo first opened in 1927 near the edge of William Land Park, dubbed “the little zoo in the park.” Bringing together 40 animals from several parks in the Sacramento area, the zoo became the new home to a variety of small animals including raccoons, birds, deer, and monkeys. A diverse collection of animals has gradually been introduced, prompting the zoo’s eventual expansion from the original 4.2 acres to 14.3 in 1960.

In 2006, the Sacramento Zoo opened a veterinary hospital which has since assisted in bringing new baby animals into the ever-growing living collection. Most recently, a collection of penguins was exhibited to celebrate the zoo’s 80th birthday.

The Sacramento Zoo’s visitor hours vary by season, and visitors are encouraged to visit the zoo’s website to view the monthly schedules. The zoo is located at Land Park Drive and 16th Avenue in Sacramento. The full address is 3930 West Land Park Drive, Sacramento, CA 95822. For questions, call (916) 808-5888. Admission costs between $6.00 and $9.00.
