Engl 50A Introduction to American Literature, I

Course Description


In this study of American literature from its beginnings through the Civil
War, we will inquire along several broad themes including: the rise of the
idea of the “American Dream,” the role of the individual in society, the
European encounter with peoples of different ethnicities, the experience of
beginning anew, and the establishment of a national identity. Our readings
will include a wide variety of texts from a diverse collection of authors. In
addition to gaining understanding of major themes in American literature,
you will also develop skills in analytical writing and close reading.
