Healthy Choice: A     Burrito You Can Love

Burritos are a great meal choice for many of us. They fill us up with little effort and they are great tasting quick and easy meals. Burritos are deceptive little treats.. they can sometimes hide themselves in fancy packages that make us think that they are a healthy alternative to our so unhealthy world. Sometimes they might have Chicken or maybe they might be wrapped in corn or wheat tortillas making them healthier but there is still room for improvement. Cheese is a big deal. Go with lighter Mexican four cheese blends to cut down on fat. Many of us love sour cream even though it can be really bad for us. If you must go for sour cream aim for the light or non-fat products as they are slightly healthier. Tortillas can be a big issue when putting together you meal. 100% Whole wheat tortillas are best but corn is also a healthier alternative to flour. You can make corn tortillas softer by putting a slight amount of water on them and then microwaving them on a paper towel for up to thirty seconds.

TIPS FOR THE BURRITO LOVER:

  • LOSE Fatty meat fillings like beef and pork.
  • USE Chicken, Seafood or Turkey. They're lighter and healthier, and have a gourmet slant that will please the taste buds.
  • LOSE Refried beans prepared with fatty extras like lard and oil.
  • USE Whole pinto beans or black beans. They give you the same flavor without the bad stuff.
  • LOSE Traditional flour tortillas are made with lard, as well as white flour, which is full of empty calories.
  • USE Low-carb and whole-wheat tortillas. You can find gussied-up versions made with sun-dried tomato and spinach, which are even healthier choices.
