Description:         &= nbsp;  Music Appreciation is a basic music orientation course f= or the layman.  A non-technical consideration of the various aspects of music literature designed to stimul= ate interest in all phases of music. The course will survey and promote an understanding of the major musical genres and styles of Western fine arts m= usic from the Middle Ages through the 21st century.=

 

Objectives:    =           The course will provide you with the tools for a basic understanding of music.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  It will not make you a musician or= teach you how to write music.  It wi= ll, however, give you the necessary background to listen, understand and discuss music a= t an educated level. The course will concentrate on (a) the development of an attentive style of listening, (b) the introduction and systematic study of = the building blocks of music, and (c) enhancing awareness of the main musical styles of selected western and non-western cultures.

 

Class Meetings:<= /span>    = There are no class meetings for this course.

 

Course Format:    =   OnMusic Appreciation is offered using the resources of the World Wide Web.  There will be no lectures in this course. Actually, you will be at the opposite pole of the lecture paradigm.= In this course, you are expected to learn concepts, solve problems, and comple= te projects independently. This will be a major component of the learning experience.  This is a fully paperless class. All course materials, including the musical examples on CD-ROM, will be accessed electronically. Electronic mail (e-mail) will be t= he main source of information and interaction.

 

            =             &nb= sp;        However, you must be fully conscious that despite its present state of sophisticatio= n, computer technology is, for many reasons, quite immature. Expect to encount= er some hurdles along the way. Don’t be frustrated by them. Learn from y= our shortcomings and those of the technologies that we will be using.

            =             &nb= sp;        Because this is an on-line class, a final grade of Incomplete (I) will be not be considered except in cases in which the student fails to complete the semes= ter due to extreme illness or trauma.

 

Assignments:    =      A daily schedule of classes is part of the on-line materials.  Students are expected to keep up w= ith the schedule. You may work ahead at your own pace and submit assignments ea= rly.  The only exceptions are the midter= m and final exams, which must be taken on the scheduled days.  Late assignments, other than the m= idterm and final exams, will be accepted with the reduction of one letter grade. Students not completing the 21 quizzes, three assignments, a concert report= and the Midterm Examination by the end of the ninth week of classes will receive zeros for those assignments not submitted.
