Selected Short Subjects from Jeff's life

After a long and humorous childhood which, at the moment, shows no signs of ending, in 1980, founded a photography supply store and gallery called LIGHTWORK.

During its seventeen year life The LIGHTWORK Gallery hosted exhibits by numerous photographers. Mostly they were little known outside the Sacramento region, but the gallery also hosted exhibits by such luminaries as Morley Baer, Oliver Gagliani, Ruth Bernhardt, Roy Decarava (whos exhibit was on the Oakland Museum of Art's Northern California bus tour), Carton Watkins and lots of others.

In 1991, with the help of many others, the gallery was re-formed into a tax exempt non-profit educational organization called The Sacramento Valley Photographic Art Center, Inc.. which operates

VIEWPOINT Gallery at 155 Sequoia Pacific Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95816.
In founding the store I had hoped that it would provide me a venue in which I could teach photography witthout getting the otherwise required Masters or PhD. For a while it did.

But ultimately, the inherently merchantile nature of a store caused people to doubt what I was teaching. This understandable scepticism made teaching them something like hand-to-hand (or is that mind-to-mind) combat. This struggle to help people against continuous resistance finally wore me down and this exhaustion led to some disasterous errors in business & personal judgement and the financial results of those errors became enormous.

So, after almost seventeen years it became time to close the store and take the next step down the road to becoming a university photography instructor. I have returned to college to  do post-graduate work.
