"Banking" vs. "Problem-Posing" in Freire

 

Following is the list we compiled as a class on Friday, 9/30/2005:

 

Qualities of "Banking" in Education

Students memorize

Teachers fill and deposit information/facts

Students receive information; only the teacher understands.

No interaction, confusing, limits creativity

Resists dialogue

Domesticates consciousness - Promotes the status quo

Students with no self-awareness or critical thinking ability

Teachers narrate

Dichotomy is present - Teachers think/students don't

"Turns men into automatons"

Teachers are the subject of the learning process

 

Qualities of "Problem-Posing" in Education

No dichotomy present - teacher and student roles reverse/overlap

More freedom in the classroom

Education can continue after graduation

Embodies communication

Learning is experienced both ways

Students question the material

College setting

Encourages critical thinking

Students discuss/research material 

Promotes revolution - students become self aware
