Extra Homework: Complete #2 on the Active Reading Activity Sheet (#1 done in class). Bring the activity to class on Monday.
Week Two
T 2/1 Tools for Writing – Summary and Narrative
HW: Read MOA: “How Boys Become Men,” 58-61; “Why Boys Don’t Play with Dolls”, 73-76; “X, A Fabulous Child’s Story,” 63-72. Write a short narrative about an experience you feel has helped shape your gender identity.
R 2/3 Toward Essay #1 – What is Gender Identity?
HW: Read EW: “Exploring Ideas,” 36-40, and handout on Writer-Based vs. Reader-Based Prose.
Week Three
T 2/8 The Writing Process
Topic for Essay #1 given – 1st draft due in one week (2/15).
HW: Read EW, 62-66 (Revising) and sample student essay. Do a pre-writing activity for Essay #1 (to be handed in with the 1st draft).
Pay close attention to the section in EW about peer response. As you read the sample student essay, ask questions and make comments/suggestions in the margins. Try to note the positive as well as the negative. You may even want to write an "endnote" on the last page summing up your major ideas for revision. Come to class prepared to discuss your response to this essay.
R 2/10 The Writing Process
HW: Bring in copies of first draft (one for each of your group members, and one for me with pre-writing.)

Week Five

HW: MOA: “Melting Pot or Salad Bowl,” 116-118; “Is There an American Tribe?” 157-159; “They’ve Got to be Carefully Taught,” 153-155.
R 2/24 Toward Essay #2
HW: Read MOA: “The Eye of the Beholder,” 129-133; “Do I Look Like Public Enemy Number One?” 140-144; “I Want to Be Miss America,” 146-151.
Do additional homework assignment - 2 options: Conduct an interview or bring in pictures/articles, etc. to discuss in class Tuesday. (See assignment sheet given out in class or posted on the web for more details).
Week Six
T 3/1 Compare/Contrast
Topic for Essay #2 given – 1st draft due in one week (3/8).
HW: Read EW: 43-48. Write an Outline for Essay #2 (to be turned in with 1st draft).
Do the additional homework assignment - Make a list of one the following: benefits of the melting pot, disadvantages of the melting pot, benefits of the salad bowl, disadvantages of the salad bowl. Bring your list to class on Thursday for discussion as we prepare to write draft 1 of Essay #2. See assignment sheet handed out in class or posted on the web for more details.
R 3/3 Structure and Organization
HW: Bring in copies of first draft (one for each of your group members, and one for me with outline).
Week Seven

Week Eight
T 3/15 Analysis – The Rhetorical Triangle

HW: Journals due next class. Bring in at least three advertisements for analysis.
R 3/17 Toward Essay #3
Journals due.
Topic for Essay #3 given. First draft due after Spring Break (3/29). Bring in copies for each of your group members, and one for me.

Week Nine
T 3/29 Workshop – Essay #3
Second Draft with Revision Response forms due in one week (4/5).
Research Paper Assignment given. 1st draft due 4/14.
Optional Extra Credit on Women's History Month due.

HW: Begin researching your topic. Write a short Paper Proposal and Annotated Bibliography of at least three possible sources. Read EW: “Doing Research,” 164-175. Look over section on MLA documentation, 367-412.
Week Eleven
T 4/12 Integrating and Citing Sources.

HW: Read EW: “Constructing Arguments,” 79-98. Respond to your peers' drafts and write a 1-page letter according to new workshop guidelines.
Week Twelve
T 4/19 Constructing an Effective Argument.
Portfolio Assignment Given. 3rd drafts of Research Paper and chosen essay due 5/5. First draft of Portfolio Cover Letter due 5/10.
R 4/21 Editing – Polishing your work.
Second Draft of Research Paper with Revision Response forms due.

Journals due.
HW: Write down three questions for the student-teacher conference. Bring in the two assignments for the portfolio, and any pre-writing/drafting for the cover letter.
R 4/28 Student-Teacher Conferences.
Week Fourteen
T 5/3 Student-Teacher Conferences. .
HW: 1-2 page write-up of the Student Teacher Conference. Bring in two copies of the papers to be included in the portfolio.
R 5/5 Workshop – Portfolio.
HW: Bring in two copies of the first draft of your Portfolio Cover Letter.
Week Fifteen
T 5/10 Workshop – Portfolio.
R 5/12 Goodbyes
Final Portfolios due at the beginning of class.
