What Is A Digital Footprint?

A digital footprint is the data you leave behind while using the internet. It can include things such as the photos you upload to social media platforms, your geolocation, the comments you post on articles, etc. It is the collection of all information regarding what you have seen and done on the internet.

Why Does It Matter?

It is difficult for users to keep a track of their digital footprint due to the ease of growing it. Many of the largest social media platforms, such as Facebook, will store your data even after deletion. Moreover, applications may be tracking your online activity without you knowing it. Companies can use, store, and sell this data for marketing purposes, effectively profiting off your activity. According to Invisibly.com, data collection has boomed into a 138.9 billion dollar industry and projects to reach 229.4 billion by 2025.

What Can I Do?

Ultimately, users should think about who could see the content, especially if it’s shared beyond it’s intended audience. Below are a few ways you can limit your digital footprint.

·         Delete social media accounts that you no longer use.

·         Routinely delete your browsing history and cookies.

·         Use a virtual private network (VPN) while browsing the internet.

·         Create new social media accounts every few months.
