Basic Skill Check

The Basic Skill Check will be administered in class on Monday of the second week. You can access the exam through the link provided below. The exact same exam linked below will be given to you in class. A perfect score on the Basic Skill Check is required to pass the course. I strongly recommend practicing in advance to ensure you are well-prepared. This is a closed book, closed notes exam. No calculators or other electronic devices are allowed.

You may find the CALC1_REVIEW and CALC2_REVIEW files posted on the course homework page helpful in preparation for this prerequisite exam.

Lecture Notes

Lecture Slides

The lectures are typically given via tablet with some information posted to the course webpage before each lecture. Below, you will find the 'before' notes for each lecture (as they are produced). The 'after' notes will hopefully be posted to the course Canvas page as they are produced. The files are password-protected. You can find the password in item 6 of the email sent to students on Monday, 01/05/2026. This introductory email is the first announcement on the course Canvas page.

    Study Tips:

  • Preview the material. Skim the lecture notes or slides the day before class so you have a sense of the main ideas and structure of the lecture.
  • Actively annotate during lecture. Make sure you have access to a hard copy of the slides or a digital copy on a tablet or laptop so you can annotate them as I annotate in class. If you do not have access to the slides, it will be difficult to take effective notes. Actively taking notes leads to better understanding and retention than simply sitting and listening.

Extra Credit

Almost every pen-and-paper homework assignment includes some questions marked in bold. You will get extra credit if you come to any of my office hours and explain your solutions to those questions. For each successful presentation you will earn 1/2 point extra credit which will be added directly to your final grade.
