Social Media & Technology Use

Amongst Children & Adolescents

Important COVID-19 Updates:

** In mid-April, California residents 16+ will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine – a huge step toward a world that’s safe from COVID-19

** What about 0 to 15? We can expect a COVID-19 vaccine for infants, kids, and younger children in late 2021.

Context:

As social media and technology has been increasing over the past century, children and adolescents tend to spend large amounts of time on them, which is detrimental to their development.

Parents/Caregivers should be the ones who supervise and oversee their electronic use.

Why is Social Media use with Adolescents and Children a problem?

The effects that arise with social media are deficiencies in language, cognitive, and sleep development. Instead of spending quality time with their kids, parents nowadays use technology as a medium of distraction, entertainment, and even “learning,” which is instead, is hindering their kids’ development. Since it is almost impossible to remove the internet from society, why not use it to reach adults and society to teach them about these effects?
