Need for change

Plastic wastes have a life span of around 1,000 years with plastic bottles taking at least 450 years or more to fully decompose.[https://www.thebalancesmb.com/how-long-does-it-take-garbage-to-decompose-2878033] The problem in the world is that we have nowhere to put all this plastic, so most of it ends up in the ocean or polluted on land. In the ocean alone about 8 million tons of plastic end up floating each year, and if this keeps up, we are on track to have more plastic than fish in the ocean soon. [https://plasticoceans.org/the-facts/] One solution would be to use hemp as a main ingredient to replace plastic because it works just as well and decomposes in 3-6 months. [https://www.green-flower.com/articles/science-research/7-ways-hemp-plastic-could-change-the-world] By switching to hemp plastics, we could reduce the amount of waste build up in the oceans because the plastic would decompose faster which would help reduce the increase of waste in the ocean.

There is still hope!

By switching from plastics to hemp-based ones, the time it takes to decompose the waste would decrease astronomically. Instead of waiting for the 8 million tons of plastic to deteriorate by the time your future grandchildren are dead, it may be gone by your next birthday. By replacing plastic bottles and other materials with hemp-based ones, the ocean would be filled with less plastic over the coming years and we could even reduce the actual number. The government can also get involved by offering incentives to business that use hemp plastics or charge more for those using harmful plastics for the environment. In order for the government to intervene there need to more public knowledge about this issue, so by spreading awareness of the ocean pollution problem then others can look for solutions. Switching to hemp plastics is both sustainable and economical. The only barrier has been public perception on hemp since the war on drugs, but now it is time to save the plane even if it means using a plant that has been classified as illegal for the past decades.

Goals for Success

*    Reduce yearly increases of plastic waste in oceans by 10%

*    Have more hemp plastics than regular plastics in market within 3 years

*    Get 1 major water bottle company to join movement within first year

Purpose

To you the viewer of this website, the purpose of this is to spread awareness. By being aware of a growing problem in our environment we can tackle the problem head on with more sustainable options that are still just as effective as the older options. By reading this website you’ve already done enough by being aware of this pollution problem, and even more importantly understanding that there are solutions to these problems.
