Text Box: Americans generate 10.5 million tons of PLASTIC waste a year but recycle only 1 or 2 % of it. An estimated 14 billion pounds of trash-most of it plastic -is dumped in the world's oceans every year. The ocean is Earth’s life support and regulates the climate system and tons of plastic and trash is being dumped into it every year affecting the ocean life and causing it to degrade.
Text Box: Five Things the Ocean does for Humans and the Planet:
Text Box: •	The air we breathe: The ocean produces over half of the world’s oxygen and absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere.
•	Climate regulation: Covers 70% of the Earth’s surface transporting heat from the equator to the poles, regulating our climate and weather patterns.
•	Recreation: From fishing to boating and whale watching, providing us with many activities.
•	Food: The ocean provides more than just seafood; ingredients from the sea are found in foods such as peanut butter and soymilk.
•	Medicine: Many products come from the ocean including ingredients that help fight cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and heart disease.
