Many believe that the United States could solve the poverty line issue by simply increasing the federal minimum wage. Although this is true to a certain extent, not every state has the same cost of living therefore the situation is more complex than it may appear. Instead, it is more important that the nation as a whole could come together to fight this issue by advocating for equal pay, helping the less fortunate, investing in affordable childcare, and reducing war or military conflicts with other countries for the purpose of using that money on other resources.

Poverty is a worldwide issue that millions of people have been affected by throughout the course of time. Despite the fact that the United States possess the #1 economy in the world, they are still vulnerable to the problem at hand. The objective of this website is to provide information and additional resources to combat the nation’s poverty level.

The Goal

By the end of 2022, the goal is to decrease the national poverty rate below the 10% mark. The official poverty rate in the United States has experienced a gradual decrease for the past five years, however it could see a resurgence due to the current COVID-19 outbreak. 2019 saw the lowest unemployment rate in over 20 years and with the promotion of pay equity as well as a decrease in the government’s military spending, the nation’s GDP could increase by approximately $600 million to over $1 billion. This could ultimately dwindle down the poverty line from anywhere between 30-32 million Americans nationwide. Once this is done, then the United States could truly regard themselves as having the most elite global economy to date.

In terms of percentage, the U.S. poverty rate may be on the lower scale of things, however considering the nation’s large population it affects way more people than most suspect. In 2019, the poverty rate was only at 10.5% but this came at the expense of approximately 34 million American citizens.
