How do we solve the traffic COngestions around sac state?

Sac State parking by the numbers: More permits issued than spaces – The State Hornet

The Problem

Driving to sac state during peak hours finds many students stuck in horrible traffic congestions. The current traffic system in place is unsuitable and does not accommodate the demand of thousands of drivers daily. Traffic in the major roads surrounding campus cause many students to be late to classes because there is traffic at every entrance. This also discourages students to attend their classes because of longer commute times. The problem that needs to be solved is the traffic system surrounding sac state.

Sac State officials aim to ease back-to-school traffic

To solve traffic issues, three objectives must be accomplished:

1.    25% reduction in number of cars being brought to campus by November 2025 to lower volume of cars on roads.

*This objective is substantial because volume of cars on the road directly impacts traffic congestions. An 8.33% reduction of cars each year allows us to reach the 25% objective by 2025, making it realistic. Number of cars can be measured by looking up number of cars that are registered to a Sac State permit.

2.   Increase number of bikes that people bring to campus by 10% by October 2025.

*This will also help reduce the number of cars and traffic near Sac State. The 10% bike increase is measured by the number of bike lockers that are used on campus and the number of slots filled up. Easily achievable objective by following the UC Davis model.

3.   Install three fully functional traffic radars on each of the busy roads near Sac State by November 2023.

*This will help officials monitor traffic near Sac State and look at trends. This is measured by the complete installation of 3 traffic radars. This is also achievable because Sac State can acquire funds that will help provide funding for the project.

If we do this:                         This will be accomplished:

25% reduction in cars at campus by November 2023

Lowers volume of cars on roads tremendously

10% increase in bikes at campus by November 2025

Helps reduce number of cars and traffic near sac state

3 fully functional traffic radars by November 2023

Helps officials monitor traffic closely near sac state to better evaluate traffic trends

Ten other solutions that can help solve traffic congestion problems around Sac State:

1.    Use internet of things (IoT) systems to improve collection/exchange of traffic data in real time

2.    Stagger class times so traffic isn’t so traffic isn’t so congested during peak class hours

3.    Encourage students who live close by campus to walk

4.    Sac state works with ride-sharing companies to provide discounted rides to students to reduce car volume through carpooling

5.    Update sac state mobile app to include traffic updates in area

6.    Create more entry points into campus

7.    Expand shuttle system to transport students to and from all off-campus housing sites

8.    Implement a pay-per-day parking system only to discourage students to drive to campus

9.    Monitor pedestrian traffic to better predict car traffic

10.  Allow students to park their car at a nearby lot and borrow a scooter or bike for free to travel to campus
