Prevent Food Waste by Donating to The Shelters and Homeless |
|
What is Food Waste and the Causes of Food Waste? Food Waste is when edible food is intentionally discarded by
producers and consumers. Good edible food can be thrown away and become food
waste when those food are not conformed to producers and consumers quality
and standard. This can happen during the food system, production, processing,
distribution, retail, and consuming. In the United States nearly 80 billion pounds of food and 40 percent of food supplies go to waste. In
California, nearly 6 million tons of food ends up in the landfill. |
|
Impacts of Food waste on the Environment Food Waste is one of the largest
contributors to global climate change. When food is wasted, energy, water,
harvesting, transporting, and packaging also go into waste. Food that ends up
in the landfills produces methane, which is a greenhouse gas that has more
potent than carbon dioxide. This can reduce the amount of oxygen to breath
from the air which traps air 28 more times compared to carbon dioxide. |
|
What Can Be Done to Reduce Food Waste? Instead of throwing away your edible food, what you can do to
reduce food waste and help others is by donating to shelters and the
homeless. The Department of Agriculture estimated that 10.5 percent of the
American people struggle to find and provide food to their families. Help
feed the hungry and make an impact on someone's life. To see where you can
