College students today have common stressors that include greater academic demands, being on your own in a new environment, changes in family relations, changes in social life, exposure to new people ideas and temptations which may lead to depression. Suicidal thoughts due to depression is becoming a frequent occurrence among college students. It is essential for college students with depression to consider options for change, seek support, and access mental healthcare. Without treatment, it can lead to negative consequences such as social isolation, academic difficulties, substance abuse, and even suicidal thoughts. Depression is a serious mental health condition that can have a significant impact on a person's life that could lead to suicide. One way to prevent depressed college students from having suicidal thoughts is to have them seek for professional help. |

Factors such as the pressure to perform well academically, financial pressures, and concerns about future job prospects increases depression. Mental health professionals can offer support, guidance, and resources to help students manage their symptoms, improve their coping skills, and develop a plan for recovery. Seeking professional help can also provide college students with access to resources that can help prevent suicide. This can include crisis hotlines, support groups, and other mental health resources that can help during times of crisis. |
Most colleges provide mental health services through counseling center or student health centers. Professional help can also help college students create a support system. This can include a therapist or counselor, as well as friends and family who can provide emotional support during difficult times. This support system can help to reduce feelings of isolation and hopelessness, which can contribute to suicidal ideation. Professional help can also provide college students with coping skills to manage stress and difficult emotions. These skills can include relaxation techniques, problem-solving strategies, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Developing these skills can help students manage stress and negative emotions in a healthy way, reducing the likelihood of suicidal thoughts or actions. |
A few effective treatments for depression are available. The most common treatments are antidepressants and psychotherapy. With a doctor or mental health care provider, they can help find the treatment that’s right for you. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can help people change negative styles of thinking and behavior that may contribute to depression. Interpersonal therapy (IPT) can help people understand and work through troubled personal relationships that may cause or worsen depression. |
