If your house caught fire, what would you save?

Natural disasters, especially fire, sudden happen without any warning; therefore, not many people are aware or even prepare for it. The Southern California wildfires in 2017 burnt more than 50,000 acres. More than 27,000 people evacuated their homes and an estimated 30 structures were destroyed, including houses of longtime residents. Many people would be evacuated in the middle of the night. They have only one second to figure out what things they should bring with them beside the one they loved. Many families lost everything in the fire Š from keys, IDs, clothing, furniture, toys, and mementos. This could happen to anyone!

Be aware it could happen to you!

It raises a question that what you would save if your house caught fire?

This is a wake-up call for me, and I begin thinking: If my house caught fired what would I save. Then a next few days, I try to decide of what possessions important to me. I find the following five things that I should save if I had to evacuate:

1.   Cell phone: to contact someone if necessary

2.   Wallet or purse: including ID, credit cards, some cash.

3.   Laptop: keep my valuable information.

4.   Car key

5.   Photo album family: my parentsÕ picture.

I encourage you to practice this exercise so that you will be able to save your valuable belongings when you are out of the house in an emergency case.

LetÕs put yourself in this situation. Your house is on fire. You have only few minutes to make decisions of what things you should grab on the way out. However, before that, letÕs consider the assumptions:

-       Yourself, your spouse, your kids are out of the house.

-       Your five prized possessions to save.

Since fire will happen suddenly and you will not have to time to think or find things you want to save. Preparing in this case is a need. To answer the question, you should follow these steps:

1.   Brainstorming to make a list including needed things to grab.

2.   Narrow down the list of five necessary things.

After finalizing the list of five, practicing is a must.

1.   Place five-thing in the easy location to grab

2.   When you get out of house, try to grab things as quick as you can to see if you are able to grab them in few seconds.
