Writing Assignment 01

Math 110B, Spring 2022.

Directions.

  1. Get the book for our class, and look over the Introduction (Chapter 1). Also review our syllabus.

  2. Go to www.overleaf.com. If you don’t already have an account, please sign up for a free one.

  3. Make sure you are logged in to Overleaf; then go to the link below to get a $\LaTeX{}$ template:

    www.overleaf.com/project/54bea727838dbf4542f54fb7

  4. Click on the Menu (in the upper-left corner); select “Copy Project”.

  5. When prompted for a name, choose something like “Math 110B - WA01” and click “Copy”.

  6. When this completes you will be back in your own workspace (instead of mine).
    • The $\LaTeX{}$ source code is on the left-hand side.
    • The pdf output is on the right-hand side.

Look over the code on the left side. Much of it may seem mysterious right now, but some of it will make sense.

  7. Edit the code on the left so that the course name reads “Math 110A”, and you are the author. Press the “Recompile” button to see the changes on the right.

  8. Delete the what I wrote in the body of the code, and replace it with the following:

Hi Josh, it’s [ insert name ]. Over the winter break, [ insert brief story about something you did over the break ]. I’ve thought a bit about my experience in Math 110A, and I wanted to let you know a bit about it. [ insert a couple of sentences about how Math 110A was for you ] After looking over the syllabus and introduction to our book, I’d like to share with you some of my intitial thoughts about the class. [ insert short paragraph about one thing you’re looking forward to and one concern that you have ] Let me end by saying that I’m really [ insert feeling ] about this course.

Press the “Recompile” button, and read over your beautiful pdf (and edit if needed).

  9. Click on the “Download PDF” button (to the right of the “Recompile” button). Save the file somewhere you can easily find it.

  10. Submit the pdf in Canvas for the assignment “Writing 01”.

Make sure to write in complete sentences, use correct punctuation, and check for typos. Please be thoughtful in your responses. If you’ve done this for me before, I’d love to hear what’s new!
