There are two checklists in PDF format to help educators use Assistive Technology and Educational Technology on campus.
For Assistive Technology, there are many standards listed in Section 508 in different categories: software, hardware, and HTML. The hardware used in education follows Assistive Technology Act of 1998 and Section 508 standards and falls under the responsibility of the manufacturer and the campus’s Assistive Technology Specialist. As for using HTML in education, campus webmasters are trained to maintain accessibility. The educator should be more concerned with and using software with their curriculum. A general checklist incorporating Section 508 standards for software applications and operating systems is used to guide instructors in using assistive technology with their students.
For Educational Technology, many educators are not aware of existing resources already on their campus, that it is even a possibility. A checklist is a good way to guide educators to develop the use technology in their curriculum.
A matrix of using Hardware, Software and Web Applications online categorized between Assistive Technology and Educational Technology is developed as part of helping instructors become aware of what kind of technology can be an educational tool. Perusing the matrix will guide the instructors’ awareness of tools already pre-existing on campus or help them narrow their search for technology tools online.
In addition to the matrix, a resource page is also available for instructors to use when looking for additional information on Assistive Technology, Instructional Technology and on Universal Design Learning resources.
