Food Insecurity in Sacramento is a serious problem

What is food insecurity?

Food Insecurity is often thought of as a black and white problem, you either have food or you don't. However, the truth of the matter is that food insecurity comes in a range from high food security to very low food security. This is becasue we take the nutrition of said food into account when calculating a person's food security. Just because you can purchase food which contains mostly cheap starches does not mean you are food secure, we aim for everybody to at least have one serving of vegetables per meal.

Sacramento's numbers

According to Feeding America, 11.9% of adults in Sacramento County report some kind of food insecurity within their household. Many of those are people who can no longer afford MOST of their meals meaning there is a high percentage of people that are food insecure and do not know it. The 11.9% only represents those who go to a food bank or soup kitchen on a semi-regular basis to make their ends meet. We encourage anyone who skips out on buying fresh produce to go to your local foodbank and get proper nutritious food.
