الجبر (al-jabr) roughly means to "restore" or "complete" and is from the title of the book Al-kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-ğabr wa’l-muqābala by Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (circa 820 CE)
